The heady beat of old school rock n roll filled Mr Kyps on Friday night with Ben Waters and his band. Ben is something of a boogie woogie legend having worked with several huge stars including Ray Davies, Charlie Watts and Dave Gilmour.
He bought home his brilliant piano playing to the small but perfectly content audience with a mix of fast and slow tracks that had us foot tapping like crazy one minute and slowly swaying the next.
With assistance from his band the bass lines were tight and the drums keeping the beat perfectly, each track went down a treat with the audience who were encouraged to put forward requests and did so; renditions of Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B Goode' and The Kinks' 'You Really Got Me' being definite highlights of the evening. The energy and infectious enthusiasm were welcomed on a chilly December night and the cockles were warmed through with the wealth of entertainment Ben brought to the room.
The ivories were put through their paces in a style not dissimilar to that of piano legend Jools Holland - it's not hard to see why they're pretty good friends. With other tracks 'This Hurricane Won't Last' and the humorous 'I Forgot' Ben is one act to watch out for in future. Finger-tappingly good.
